While glass cremation urns (also called Funerary Urns or Cinerary Urns, urns for ashes) can be made to order in any imaginable shape, size, or color... let's speak about Classic Cremation Urn shapes and sizes here.
Proceeding back through history, there are a few different shapes used for Cremation Urnswhich recur. The most common shape of Urn (perhaps strictly from a geographic population factor) is the Ginger Jar Urn.: We call this the Classic Cremation Urn. This shape is often seen as an Asian design, also referred to as a Ginger Jar Urn, as it has appeared throughout Asia for thousands of years. The Ginger Jar (Urn) was used to store foodstuffs and precious valuables as well as acted as a beautiful piece of art in the home. This classic shape is used throughout the world today in many different ways and the shape appears in utilitarian as well as artistic forms.
The Flared Urn above, has just as regal a history and also continues into modernity as a shape which is as comfortable in an American West Ranch Home as in a 14th Century French Provincial Estate. The Flared Urn shape emulates a form found in early Mediterranean Art and specifically Greek Urns (both funerary Urns as well as storage urns used in households).
The Flared Urns timeless flared opening refers back to Amphorae and other ceramic storage vessels that captured the most valuable contents. Often vessels(which the Flared Urn shares features) stored sensitive contents like olive oil and spices that needed to be protected from the elements to maintain their purity. While others used Funerary Urns, like the Flared Urn, the Greeks did use Funerary urns as a historical monument or Memorial to the memory of a lost loved one. Most often a heroic or high ranking soldier lost in battle were returned from the battlefield in an Urn after a field cremation.
All our designs can be "niche" sized. If you intend on using one of our urns in a niche, please be sure to provide us with the dimensions of your niche to assure fit.
